If you own a bicycle, one of the best investments you can make involves a good bicycle storage system.  Today’s bike storage mechanisms are more inexpensive and space-saving than ever.  Gone are the days when one simply stored his bike in the garage with the kickstand down, and returned to find one or both tires flat.
There are many different mechanisms for storage for bikes available, both for inside and outside storage.  For example, in a small apartment or condominium, one may opt to use a pulley hoist system.  Such a mechanism uses a system of pulleys to raise your bicycle off the floor and up toward the ceiling of your home.  This, of course, allows you to utilize the space underneath for whatever you desire.  When you want to use the bike, you unlock the mechanism and slowly lower it to the floor, using the pulleys.
Another very simple mechanism is a ceiling hoist (also called bicycle storage racks).  A ceiling hoist is nothing more than a metal device that is mounted onto the wall at an appropriate height.  The bike can then be placed on the hoist when not in use, and the space underneath can be utilized as needed.  Although a ceiling hoist is perfectly functional and works well under many circumstances, it does require some upper body strength to lift the bike from the floor to the hoist and from the hoist to the floor.  For this reason, a pulley system might be better suited for bikes that are heavier or riders that are more petite than this type of bike rack.
Also available are bicycle wall mount systems that allow for the storage of two bikes at once.  These devices tend to be used in garages, as outdoor bicycle storage, because they are often vertical and stand from floor to ceiling.  Of course, if you and your partner ride together and would rather store your bikes in the garage, such a system might be exactly what you need.  Installation is not complicated, and requires affixing the hardware of the mount to the garage wall using screws or bolts.
In essence, virtually all bike storage systems are predicated upon the idea that your bike needs to be off the ground.   Most manufacturers use that premise to incorporate a space saving feature, which is wonderful for apartment dwellers, or those of us who don’t want an enormous piece of exercise equipment taking up space in our den.   Prices for bicycle storage systems have never been cheaper and the technology has never been cooler.  And, even better yet, most systems can be installed by the average person who can use a drill and a screwdriver.  Do yourself (and your expensive bicycle) a favor and invest a few dollars in one of these systems today.  You will be glad that you did.
